Diamond Head steered clear of lyrical cliches on self-titled album

Diamond Head mainman Brian Tatler says he was blown away by singer Rasmus Bom Andersen’s lyrics on the band’s seventh album.

The NWOBHM icons released their self-titled album last month, the first to feature Anderson on vocals. The Danish-born Londoner replaced Nick Tart in 2014.

Tatler tells We Love Metal: “What I really like about Ras’ lyrics is that they are not cliched. He’s done a great job. I love his melodies and the sound of his voice, but lyrically it’s not run-of-the-mill, same-old same old.”

The guitarist adds that he had no interest in recording a follow-up to 2007’s What’s in Your Head? until the band hired Andersen.

He adds: “Our last singer Nick emigrated to Australia in 2008 and it became impossible to get together to write or rehearse. We would only get together for tours and it left no time to write new songs.

“I kind of lost the will to do it. I just didn’t wanna do another album where you send files over the net. It’s not how I used to do it or how a lot of my favourite albums were made.

“Once we decided to get a new singer and found Rasmus, we talked about writing together. And I thought we should at least try to write together and just see. I gave him a lot of material that I had been writing since 2007.

“He picked out ones he liked and we got together in January of last year in a rehearsal room and started working on the material.”
