With almost two decades of history, Alcatraz is by no means the newest event on the European metal scene, but as it enters its nineteenth year, it’s expanded for its biggest edition ever. For the first time, Alcatraz will boast four full days of kickass metal, featuring one of the most stacked lineups you’ll see anywhere in Europe this summer.

Taking place from August 6-9 in Kortrijk, Belgium, Alcatraz 2026 is packed with a diverse selection of metal heavyweights, underground heroes and the rising bands shaping the sound of metal for the future.

Headlining Thursday will be Scottish pirate metallers Alestorm, supported by the likes of Max Cavalera’s Soulfly, Motörhead legend Mikkey Dee, thrash veterans Sacred Reich and metalcore favourites Imminence. Meanwhile, Friday will see deathcore brutes Slaughter To Prevail headline, with rap metal OGs Body Count, Belgian post-metallers Amenra, bonkers avant-garde metal crew Igorrr, riff kings Crowbar and Scottish metalcore bruisers Bleed From Within also bringing the heavy.

Headlining Saturday will be a refreshed Arch Enemy, now fronted by Lauren Hart as they enter a new era, with thrash metal innovators Testament, metallic hardcore rabble-rousers Hatebreed, folk metal legends Amorphis, rising Swedish metal sensations Orbit Culture and beloved 90s alt metallers Primus also playing. Finally, closing out Alcatraz on Sunday night will be werewolf-loving headliners Powerwolf, with US metal royalty Lamb Of God, NWOBHM icons Saxon, extreme metal overlords Satyricon and Deicide and post-hardcore faves The Ghost

Inside included among the dozens of other bands playing. If that monster of a lineup isn’t enough to tempt you (and if not, what’s wrong with you?!), the festival itself just might be. As one of Europe’s cosiest and most welcoming metal fests, Alcatraz offers a genuinely lovely atmosphere - a truly independent event designed to create the best environment possible for headbangers to lose themselves in a weekend of thrilling and diverse metal.

The festival’s location makes it a breeze to get to, too - Kortrijk is easily accessible from a wealth of European hubs with great transport links, including Lille, Brussels and Ghent. Alcatraz is also part of the United Festival Force, an alliance of independent European metal festivals that is shaping the summer touring schedules of many artists. Over the years, the organisers – all sharing a passion for metal – have grown into a close-knit group that supports one another while preserving the identity of their own events.

For fans, that means the chance to discoverother festivals within the network, each with its own local character and atmosphere, rather than a one-size-fits-all experience. As a result, Alcatraz has never lost its focus of putting the fans at the heart of its growth over the years; the roots of its conception evolved from late-night conversations at a local thrash metal bar in Ghent many years ago.

That spirit is what still carries through Alcatraz today, from its unique prison theme to its cool installations and its incredible atmosphere. It’s also a much more affordable, easily navigable festival than many of the mega-fests dominating the European circuit, with hotel packages and very reasonable VIP upgrades also available for metalheads who like a dose of comfort with their heavy.

So that’s one blockbuster lineup, a fantastic atmosphere, and a great location – all for a decent price and packing an experience you’ll never forget. What are you waiting for?
