It was Global Beatles Day yesterday but if you've been waiting for the weekend to unwind and celebrate the Fab Four but aren't sure what to watch, I thought it would be a good idea to collect some of the better documentaries about The Beatles, as available on some of the best TV and film streaming services.

The formative titans of early rock and studio experimentation are simultaneously globally renowned and criminally underrated, an intriguing paradox that only serves to pull you deeper into the music and the mythos of the band that may or may not have been Bigger Than Jesus.

The 2025 documentary by Morgan Neville follows McCartney on his journey out from under the shadow of the world’s most famous band. It covers his first solo efforts and the formation of Wings, via heady swathes of archival footage. If McCartney wasn’t your favourite before, this might move the dial a bit.

Peter Jackson’s meticulous stitching-together of archival footage from the making of Let It Be – that is, both the album and the documentary film accompanying it – is a metatextual wonder. You are a fly on the wall, but the Beatles know you’re there; it’s hauntingly intimate but also All A Show, as the band play up for cameras in spite of their various and glaringly-apparent internecine struggles.

The Beatles: Get Back is a hugely valuable series, and worth watching for the run-up to the rooftop gig; for the insights into early Apple Studios; or just to see Paul write Get Back in real time. For me, the real definitive moment of the series is Paul and John attempting to have a serious conversation between themselves on a soundstage, before their eyes, and the camera, look up to a boom mic dangled daringly overhead – at which point they immediately switch gears to japery.

The Beatles’ journey was a remarkably short one, being that everything they did they did in just eight years. It’s hard to believe that just five years prior to the bittersweetness of Let It Be, they were on the cusp of breaking America – a journey revisited with careful reverence by this Martin Scorcese-produced documentary.

Beatles ’64 interviews Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney in the present day, amongst a coterie of cultural commentators and people present for the day Beatlemania truly went international.

John Lennon: Love Is All You Need

Over on Netflix, avowed John Lennon fans will find themselves somewhat satisfied by this retrospective on Lennon’s life. John Lennon: Love Is All You Need combines never-before-seen footage with old Lennon interviews, and new interviews with Lennon’s family – including an often unheard-from Cynthia Lennon. The thrust of the doc is nothing new, but the insights within do build a more three-dimensional picture of the Beatles’ most complicated character.

Finally, where better to get the whole story about the Beatles than from the Beatles themselves? The Beatles: Anthology is an expansive 1995 documentary series produced by the Beatles’ parent company Apple Corp, that explores the full history of the Beatles from before the beginning to after the end – through the Beatles, in their own words.

The same restoration technology that Peter Jackson used on Get Back was used to spruce up the footage for a new audience, and another episode with new footage of the remaining members’ getting-together to record Free As A Bird and Real Love is a neat epilogue on a definitive history of the Beatles as a project.

With three nations set to jointly host the men's 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Canadian opening ceremony isn't the only one you can enjoy.

Mexico kick things off their show being broadcast live from Estadio Axteca in Mexico City at 12:30pm ET on Thursday, June 11 before Mexico take on South Africa. A new feature-length documentary charting the life and career of rock icon Billy Idol is set to hit Sky Arts and streaming service NOW from Thursday, March 26.

A new documentary focusing on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ formative years and late guitarist Hillel Slovak is explored in a new documentary film hitting Netflix on Friday, March 20.

The Rise Of The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel was directed by Ben Feldman and charts the high school friendship between Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Slovak - a friendship that would see the trio join together with drummer Jack Irons in the Chili Peppers' early line-up before Hillel's death in 1988 of an accidental heroin overdose.

Said to be a "raucous, moving, and surprisingly tender look at the power of adolescent bonds, and the enduring legacy of Hillel,” the film is told through Hillel’s journal entries and uses "unseen archival footage, and emotional interviews with current and former band members, including Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, as well as Alain Johannes of Eleven, and funk legend George Clinton."

The 93-minute film made its debut at the SXSW Film & TV Festival last week.

Paul McCartney's post-Beatles life and career with Wings will be explored in the new documentary Man On The Run - and it's all set to hit Amazon Prime Video from Friday, February 27.

The film has been directed by Academy Award-winner Morgan Neville and is said to chronicle "the arc of McCartney's solo career as he faces down a myriad of challenges while creating new music to define a new decade."

The press release continues: "Through unprecedented access to previously unseen footage and rare archival materials, the documentary captures Paul’s transformative post-Beatles era through a uniquely vulnerable lens."

In the film, McCartney says: "The Beatles had been my whole life really. When we split up, I thought: ‘I’ll never write another note of music ever.’"

He adds: "We started Wings from square one. It was about trying to do something different. Wings was a dud when it had first come out. If anybody bad-mouthed us, I was thinking: ‘I’m going to make the best record you’ve ever heard.’”

McCartney also served as executive producer on the project.

How to watch Man On The Run

Amazon Prime Video is just one of the many excellent TV and film streaming services currently available - and it's home to loads of brilliant music content and more.

You can watch all four seasons of The Osbournes, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, the unmissableWe Are Twisted Sister, Pink Floyd: The Wall, Led Zeppelin: In The Light, and live offerings including Amazon Music Live: Foo Fighters and Guns N' Roses Live Rarities.

Away from music, and Amazon Prime video is home to video game spin-off Fallout, The Rings Of Power, six seasons of sci-fi epic The Expanse, based on the brilliant James S.A. Corey books, and a huge library of classic TV series and movies including The X-Files, Back To The Future, RoboCop, Labyrinth, Mad Max, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Amazon Prime Video also has a whole bunch of Live TV channels showing a huge variety of constantly streaming content. Some of my favourites streaming around the clock include FIFA+, Super Bowl Champions, The Incredible Hulk, History Hunters, Hot Ones and the brilliant cult classic TV series Northern Exposure.

Amazon Prime Video also serves as a hub for other streaming services such as Paramount+, Apple TV, Discovery+, Shudder and Crunchyroll, while TV favourites and films are also available to rent or purchase through the service.

We’re firmly living in the Streaming Age now – and, truth be told, it’s a little more like the olden days of TV packages and straight-up cable. With so many different competing platforms, each with their own libraries of TV and cinema to scrutinise, it’s a toughie to hitch your post to a particular service. That's why we've covered a guide to the best TV and film streaming services to help you make a choice between them.

Under the microscope here is Paramount+: a streamer on the cheaper side, and with some excellent IPs to its name, but a lack of music content lets it down.

Prices and tiers

In the US, there are only two Paramount+ tiers available– an ad-full, HD-only Essential plan, for $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year, and a similar ad-free Premium (with 4K, Atmos and four devices) for $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. When other streamers are asking upwards of $18/£15 per month for advanced tiers, these prices aren’t bad at all.

In the UK, from where I’m reviewing Paramount+, there are three tiers – Basic, Standard and Premium. Basic (£4.99 a month/£43.99 a year) is your run-of-the-mill, ad-filled and barely-HD viewing experience; Standard (£7.99 a month / £70.99 a year) is ad-free, with the capability to stream on two devices at once; and Premium (£10.99 / £97.99 a year) offers 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos viewing on up to four devices. I’m reviewing the Premium tier.

Content

Paramount+ is the home for six key media brands besides itself: Showtime, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV, and Smithsonian. You can search for shows this way, as if switching channels, or you can explore sections by genre, mood or aspirational sentence.

There’s a range of standard accessibility features available, including subtitles, closed captions and audio descriptions. These are easy to access on app versions of the platform, but sometimes bug out of appearing in browser; a shame!

It’s hard to ignore an open goal Paramount+ has missed, with respect to one particular brand: MTV. There’s a treasure-trove of music-related programming in those archives, barely any of which gets to shine on Paramount+. Case firmly in point: why on earth, with the MTV brand in the palm of your hand, would you only offer one MTV Unplugged to watch – and why is it Eric Clapton?

Ultimately this is MTV’s failing, of course, being a now-defunct channel that resolved to show the worst of the worst reality television in its retirement years. There are, at least, some music-documentarian gems here, but you have to wade through row after row of the insufferable and insipid first – before you get to the bottom of the page, where they’re all helpfully bundled into a category entitled “Documentaries and Specials”.

Here, I found the oddly-charming half-gem of a series, Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bassists Human Too?; a lightweight and somewhat self-aggrandizing combination of travel show, artist biography and food tourism segment, wherein That Guy From Rush™ hangs out with famous rock bassists on their days off. Watch on as he operates Les Claypool’s personal excavator, and attends a gig played by Robert Trujillo’s teenage son; listen, as his calm voiceover narrates such scenes, providing historical context to artist and location alike.

There’s also, of course, Ozzy: No Escape From Now, the documentary that chronicles the final weeks before Ozzy Osbourne’s last ever gig – and, ultimately, the final weeks of his life. It’s a moving, touching, sometimes difficult-to-watch portrait of a swan song in motion, and a credit to the platform.

At the time of review, Paramount’s selection of originals and exclusives is quite strong; among the many semi-forgettable, there’s Landman, Taylor Sheridan’s darling successor to Yellowstone and the launching of a thousand TikTok clips. You may also get a kick out of MobLand, a similarly ersatz-reverent, Guy Ritchie-produced slice of British criminal-underworld goodness starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren at their typecast best.

For existing IPs, Paramount+ makes a big deal of its dominion over Star Trek, and of the myriad spin-offs it’s commissioned in recent years. Not being much of a Trekkie household, my wife and I instead got a great kick out of revisiting Comedy Central’s South Park, among other adult-animation classics like Beavis and Butthead and Daria. We were also buoyed by the general excellence of the Nickelodeon section.

We were also pleasantly surprised to find the original two seasons of Twin Peaks on the platform; an inarguably oblique bit of programming, a world apart from NCIS: Tony and Ziva and the Sexy Beast TV spinoff I spotted it nestled between.

User experience

I did most of my Paramount+ reviewing (read: couch-potatoing with some favoured television) using the PlayStation 5's Paramount+ app, which was a smooth enough experience. I found the search bar a little slow, and not quite as smart as Netflix’s – but still smarter than other platforms I’ve tried.

As for streaming, media sometimes took a little time to resolve from a compressed, blocky mess – but never long enough to beat the studio logos at the start of a given film. The 4K experience is otherwise excellent in-app; it’s a shame it doesn’t translate to browser.

Anti-piracy measures mean that pretty much every streaming service is a little worse in-browser than via a dedicated app, and Paramount+ is no different. There’s an unfocused lossiness to the stream that feels more like watching a 780p YouTube video than a premium-tier service.

The alternatives

Here's a good place to mention that Paramount+ can also be accessed via Amazon Prime Video, as an add-on bundle. I find the Amazon Prime Video app and browser slightly more stable to navigate, but there’s a caveat in the form of less available content and features. It's also a platform positively crammed with music content, classic movies, TV series and family fabvourites.

For a different flavour entirely, the nearest competitor to Paramount+ would be Disney+; you trade Star Trek for Star Wars, Showtime for STARZ and Nickelodeon for, well, Disney! Music content here isn't exactly overwhelming, but there's definitely enough to keep you occupied - especially if you're a fan of The Beatles.

If you’re after a broader catalogue of media, music media included, it’s hard not to talk about Netflix. It’s the most expensive of the mainstream streamers going, but it’s unparalleled for breadth of content.

The BBC iPlayer is also home to a whole heap of excellent music-related content and more. Definitely one to tune into if you have a UK TV licence. For more details, we've written about how you can watch BBC iPlayer from anywhere.

The days of channel surfing were meant to be a thing of the past, replaced instead with the remarkable convenience of the best TV and film streaming services. Unfortunately, the problem wasn’t the channels; it was us, and our indecision – something which bleeds not just into picking what to watch, but also where to watch things on.

This is because the streaming ‘wars’ are all-but over, with a cavalcade of services and streamers all competing for that vaunted spot in your direct debit list.

Disney+ is one of the major players in this regard, being a mainstream service with a huge library of instantly-recognisable content – but what type of music content is available? Does a subscription represent good value for money? Ultimately, does Disney+ deserve your patronage?

Prices and tiers

Disney+ offers two subscription tiers in the US – Basic and Premium – the cheapest of which is $11.99 per month with ads and no downloads, and the premium-est of which is $18.99 per month (or $189.99 per year) with no ads and yes downloads. Both tiers enjoy 4K streaming, and you can add an extra member to either with an extra monthly $6.99.

In the UK, there are three subscription tiers: The first, and cheapest, comes in at £5.99 per month, and offers simple 1080p streaming with occasional ads peppered in; the second is a Standard plan, at £9.99 per month, removes the ads, adds another device to your streaming capacity, and allows you to download media for offline watching.

At the top of the pyramid, you can have Premium for £14.99 per month, with 4K HDR media and the capacity to stream across four devices. You can also add an extra member to any one account, with an additional monthly cost of £4.99 for Standard with Ads or £5.99 for the upper two tiers.

Content

Disney+ is, naturally, home to a wealth of kid-friendly and animated media, from classic Disney animations such as Fantasia and Snow White to modern-classic Pixar features from Toy Story to Soul.

Disney+ is also an inspiring platform for music content and features a rich seam of documentary filmmaking, from reflexive looks at film-scoring in Music By John Williams to examinations of Bruce Springsteen and Elton John.

Arguably old news by now, but nonetheless a series about which I’ll continue singing from the rooftops (eh? eh?), is a Disney+ exclusive: Peter Jackson’s sprawling, yet granular exploration of The Beatles’ writing and recording of Let It Be, in the form of three-part, near-eight hour-long limited series Get Back.

It’s an astonishing piece of patchwork filmmaking, using extensive audio and video recorded by Michael Lindsay-Hogg (initially cribbed into 1970 feature film Let It Be, also now available on Disney+) to build a true fly-on-the-wall experience. Talent, tension and surprisingly relatable camaraderie abound in an invigoratingly touching snapshot of a band in crisis. Never has watching a bunch of late twenty-somethings lark about in a studio been so engrossing.

If The Beatles isn’t quite your speed, there's a good amount of content to dig through - although I would like to see more musical content added to the roster.

At the time of writing, you can also watch celebrated Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen Rock Montreal, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, Summer ’82: When Zappa Came To Sicily, Abbey Road: If These Walls Could Sing, Hip-Hop And The White House, and the 2024 biopic on The Beach Boys.

Disney also owns the Star Wars IP, making it the exclusive home of countless new spin-offs, origin stories, limited series and pre-existing cartoon media.

And if that wasn't enough, Disney+ is also home to the entire Marvel universe, more Pixar movies and shorts than you can shake a stick at, the National Geographic Channel, the Hulu network (featuring The Beatles Anthology, the excellent comedy crime drama Only Murders In The Building starring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short, Alien Earth, and the entertaining football documentary series Welcome To Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

User experience

Using the Disney+ app as installed on my LG smart TV, I found the experience of browsing and selecting media surprisingly easy. It’s at least as responsive as Netflix’s own library, and much faster than a great deal of other platforms I’ve tried before. Same went for streaming, where media resolved quickly and rarely faltered.

In my testing of the Standard With Ads tier, I found the mid-roll ads surprisingly unobtrusive; any ad break is a frustration, but it’s far less of one when it’s between 40 and 90 seconds long, and when it’s well-timed enough that you were already getting up to make a cup of tea anyway.

The alternatives

For music, cartoons and family-friendly media, there’s a wealth of alternative content on Paramount+. The remit of this particular subscription service is much smaller – with an accordingly lower price in each equivalent tier – but what is there is well worth the money.

Netflix is always going to show up as an alternative, being arguably the OG streaming platform and bigger than it’s ever been. There’s a broad range of content across all genres, but nothing quite like Star Wars I’m afraid.

And let's not forget the mighty Amazon Prime Video which has a ridiculous amount of excellent music-related content spanning multiple genres including The Osbournes, alongside series like Fallout and Rings Of Power, and live TV streams dedicated to fan-favourites such as Northern Exposure and The Incredible Hulk.

How to watch in the US

Green Day setlist predictions

There's been lots of speculation about what songs Green Day will roll out ahead of the big game - and, with the trio consistently speaking out against political violence as part of their live shows, all eyes will be on them this weekend - especially with such a big TV audience watching.

They're bound to play American Idiot - a song the band's used in the past to criticise US President Donald Trump. Holiday is another track I expect to see played with the group putting a political spin on it at the recent annual iHeartRadio ALTer EGO 2026 festival.

Other tracks I think will be in the mix include Basket Case, When I Come Around, Welcome To Paradise and Longview.

There's no official word about how long the performance is scheduled for, but if it's anything like the half-time show, I expect it to come in at around 20-25 minutes.

Who's playing the Super Bowl halftime show

Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LX half-time show on February 8, fresh from his Grammy Award win for Album Of The Year for his sixth record Debí Tirar Más Fotos. His win marked the first time a Latin artist had won the accolade in the Grammys’ 68-year history.

Speaking about his Super Bowl appearance, Bad Bunny said in a statement: “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself. It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown. This is for my people, my culture, and our history.”

The Peter Jackson-produced The Beatles: Get Back is also available through Disney+ and it sits alongside other music content such as Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, Bowie: The Man Who Changed The World, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown with Timothée Chalamet and the 2024 film The Beach Boys.

Away from music, Disney+ is home to the entire Star Wars universe, all things Marvel, Pixar, National Geographic and, of course, Disney. The visually spectacular Tron: Ares starring Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges, launched earlier this month, while you can also binge on 37 seasons of The Simpsons, explore the Originals channel and Hulu network, which features the brilliant Only Murders In The Building, Shogun, Alien Earth and The Bear.

I might be a bit biased here because Rush are one of my favourite bands, but there's something genuinely refreshing seeing Geddy Lee hang out and chat with some of the biggest bassist in rock. This is a small four-part series, but we get the opportunity to see the Rush legend interact with Robert Trujillo, Les Claypool, Melissa Auf Der Maur and Krist Novoselic.

Lolla: The Story Of Lolapalooza

This is a neat behind the scenes look at how the massive Lollapalooza festival got started back in the good old days of 1991 and how it's grown over the years to become a huge cultural phenomenon that's still going strong today.

Behind The Music

This is a series of shorts that premiered back in 1997 and takes a peek behind the curtain to see what makes artists and bands tick. There's loads of content covering a variety of genres to delve into, and that includes artists such as Motley Crue, Poison's Bret Michaels, Wolfgang Van Halen, Alanis Morisette and Ice T.

Nothin' But A Good Time

Named after Poison's hit 1988 single, Nothin' But A Good Time is a no holds barred, three-part series that looks back on the infamous rock and metal scene in the US in the 80's. I highly recommend watching it no matter what style of music you're into, as it really gives a flavour of what it was like to be in some of the most famous bands of the decade.

Away from music, there's the entire Star Trek universe to explore, movies like The Substance, Gladiator II and Novocaine to watch, and TV shows such as MobLand, Tulsa King, Yellowstone and Buffy The Vampire Slayer to dive into.

Compared to the other big streaming platforms, Apple TV flies a little under the radar at times, with some customers mistakenly believing that it’s only available to people with an Apple device. There’s loads for music fans to enjoy, including Bono: Stories Of Surrender, Bruce Springsteen: Letter To You, and the first season of The Beatles: Get Back. You can also buy or rent movies through Apple TV, with great titles like Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck and David Bowie’s Moonage Daydream among the many awesome options available.

Away from music and I love series such as Slow Horses, a funny and fast-paced spy drama that follows a team of dysfunctional MIG agents led by the obnoxious Jackson Lamb (played by Gary Oldman). There’s Invasion, a breathtaking sci-fi thriller in which aliens arrive on Earth, threatening humanity’s very existence. We’ve been spoilt for Black Friday streaming deals so far, with some amazing discounts doing the rounds - from 50% off monthly and annual Paramount+ plans, to nice savings on the brilliant Roku Streaming Stick HD.

With all the Black Friday streaming deals flying around, it’s hard to keep up with everything that’s going on today. Just be aware that some of the channels I've mentioned will require a subscription - not everything on the stick is free.

The Amazon Prime Day music deals are in full swing and while looking for some new music documentaries to watch, I found out that Paramount Plus are holding a summer sale all of their own, with money off subscription plans in both the US and UK.

In the US you can get two months of Paramount Plus for 0.99 cents per month, while in the UK, you can save 50% on monthly plans for 3 months, or on an annual plan.

This is great news because not only does Paramount Plus stream a whole bunch of classic movies, TV favourites and is home to all things Star Trek-shaped, but there’s hour upon hour of music docs, live sets and more to get stuck into.

Metallica’s Master Of Puppets has been streamed one billion times on Spotify.

The 1986 track crossed the 10-digit threshold earlier this week. It’s the California metal titans’ third song to reach the landmark, following Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman, both from their blockbuster 1991 self-titled album (AKA The Black Album).

Master Of Puppets, the title track of Metallica’s lauded third album, was released as a radio single on July 2, 1986, almost four months after its namesake record came out via Elektra. It quickly became a fixture of the band’s setlist and was acclaimed by fans and critics for its technicality and neoclassical touches. Its lyrics refer to the control that alcohol and drug addiction can have over people.

The track was co-written by all of Metallica’s then-members: singer/guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Cliff Burton. It would be one of Burton’s last songwriting credits during his lifetime, as the bassist died in a bus crash while the band were touring Sweden in September 1986. He was 24 years old.

In 2022, Master Of Puppets was featured on the soundtrack of Netflix series Stranger Things’ fourth season and became a mainstream hit. It charted in the US and the UK for the first time since its release and reached number four in the Netherlands.

Amidst the attention post-Stranger Things, Metallica released a music video for the song, 36 years after it first came out, and recorded a viral TikTok of them miming along to the Master Of Puppets scene in the series.

According to setlist database setlist.fm, Master Of Puppets has been performed live 1,758 times, making it Metallica’s most-played song. The band will likely add to that tally when they embark on a run of North American shows later this month. See below for all dates and details.

Cradle Of Filth's Dani Filth has condemned Spotify, and says he "owes it" to his fellow musicians to not have an account on the streaming platform.

In a new interview on Sonic Perspectives, the frontman explores the realities of living as an artist during a time where music is so readily and cheaply accessible in digital spaces.

He says (via Blabbermouth), “I owe it to my brethren in metal and music not to have a fucking Spotify account because they don’t pay people. It’s not just them — it’s just platforms in general.

“I appreciate the fact that people could discover you from another band and whatever; I’ve heard it a million times. But I’m old school… I want my bands to be paid because if they’re not paid, they’re not bands anymore."

Noting the impact of streaming platforms on the livelihood of musicians, he continues: “I know so many people from big bands that since the pandemic have gone, ‘You know what? I’m taking a proper job. So you’ll see me less often. We’ll still be doing albums, but probably once every five years,’ because it just seems like daylight robbery.”

Filth then goes on to compare the act of streaming music to taking food illegally from shops, explaining: "If you owned a delicatessen or a fucking supermarket even, people aren't allowed to just come in and help themselves to free produce, which is what people think they're entitled to do with music because it's a periphery thing and it's in the air.

"You can't physically touch music. But how do you expect bands to survive without that?"

The frontman additionally shines a light on the film industry clamping down on online piracy, noting how he feels there's less strict attitudes to consuming music without fully paying for it. ""Obviously, they really try [to combat piracy] with movies, and there's more money involved in movies — obviously," he says.

"But in England, we used to have these, not up to very recently, this whole advert they had before the movie starts where 'video piracy is killing the movie industry', and they even go to the point where they'd have this slamming prison doors, in IMAX quality sound, THX. 'You're going to prison if you watch a bootleg movie.' But not the same for… I know back in the day [they had a message on the back of albums saying that] 'home taping is killing music,' but nowadays it's like a fucking free for all."

This is not the first time Filth has aired his disapproval of the service. In 2023, he dubbed Spotify "the biggest criminals in the world".

While in conversation with Sakis Fragos of Rock Hard Greece, he explained: "It's been deteriorating ever since… I think 2006 was the year that everything swapped from being comfortable for musicians — well, not necessarily comfortable; it was never comfortable.

"But [it went to] just being a lot harder with the onset of the digital age, the onset of music streaming platforms that don't pay anybody. Like Spotify are the biggest criminals in the world. I think we had 25, 26 million plays last year, and I think personally I got about 20 pounds, which is less than an hourly work rate."

A Spotify spokesperson recently responded to Filth's claims, stating: “£20!? Spotify has paid out around a million dollars in revenue to Cradle of Filth’s rightsholders for fans’ streams of their catalog. We’re disappointed to hear that Spotify’s payments are not making it through to the band.”

Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name has been streamed one billion times on Spotify.

Guitarist Tom Morello announced that the rap metal band’s 1992 single crossed the billion-stream threshold in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, January 11.

“Killing In The Name just hit 1 billion streams on Spotify!” he wrote. “Thanks to all those who listened to it: those who love it, those who hate it, and those that have enjoyed it without understanding it. Righteous proof that rebel music and irony are alive and well.”

Killing In The Name was released in November 1992 as the lead single from Rage Against The Machine’s self-titled debut album. It instantly drew acclaim and controversy for the Los Angeles four-piece, whose mixture of rap and metal had only been attempted by a handful of bands before them.

The lyrics, which feature numerous profanities, attack racist police officers and the military-industrial complex. They also contain arguably Rage Against The Machine’s most famous line: “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.”

Reflecting on Killing In The Name’s lyrics in a 2020 Rolling Stone interview, Morello said: “‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me’ is a universal sentiment. While it’s a simple lyric, I think it’s one of [Zack De La Rocha’s, vocalist] most brilliant.

“And to me, it relates to Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass said, the moment he became free was not the moment that he was physically loosed from his bonds. It was the moment when master said, ‘Yes.’ And he said, ‘No.’ And that’s the essence of ‘Fuck you, I will not do what you tell me.’”

The song was a chart hit in 1992, reaching the top 20 in four countries, but found its greatest commercial success almost two decades later. In 2009, a social media campaign to get Killing In The Name to the UK’s coveted Christmas number one position over Joe McElderry, winner of prime-time TV talent show The X Factor, was successful.

Rage Against The Machine released two more studio albums after their debut (1996’s Evil Empire and 1999’s The Battle Of Angeles) before splitting in 2000. They’ve reunited multiple times since, most recently in 2020, but as of January 2024 are once again inactive.

According to Spotify’s official ‘Billions Club’ playlist, only 850 songs have reached the 10-digit mark. Other heavy metal tracks to have joined those hallowed ranks include Metallica’s Enter Sandman, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid and System Of A Down’s Chop Suey.

Paramount Plus is joining the fray of streaming platforms offering hefty discounts on their services in honour of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Right now, they are offering a not insignificant 77% off two months of their ad-free streaming service, with the price set at $2.99 for the first two months (it resumes to the normal price of $12.99 after this period).

There's a surprising amount of decent music stuff tucked away on Paramount Plus. There's As We Speak, a film which explores America's weaponisation of rap and hip-hop music against artists in the US' criminal justice system and abroad. There's the Behind The Music documentary series with Huey Lewis, Bret Michaels, Alanis Morissette, Motley Crue and many more. There's Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bass Players Human Too?, a series in which the Rush legend interviews his favourite bassists including Metallica's Robert Trujillo and Nirvana's Krist Novoselic.

It also includes How Music Got Free, an exploration of how Napster, Limewire and "internet pirates who nearly destroyed the music industry". We imagine Lars Ulrich will be watching this one, shaking his head in disgust, quietly muttering "I told you so!" to himself. There's also Family Legacy, which offers a different view of some of our favourite musicians by interviewing their children.

Elsewhere there are docs on 80s hair metal, Lollapalooza, Madonna, Elvis, Don McLean's American Pie, Willie Nelson and Milli Vanilli, if that's your sort of thing.

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante says Metallica were right to wage war on Napster, adding that Spotify is "where music goes to die."

Benante, who has also been Pantera's touring drummer since their revival in 2022, says the the music business has been stripped to the bare bones by greed, leaving the artists with little reward for their work.

He tells the Irish Times: "I don't subscribe to Spotify. I think it is where music goes to die. We have the music on there because we have to play along with the fucking game, but I'm tired of playing the game.

"We get taken advantage of the most out of any industry. As artists, we have no health coverage, we have nothing. They fucked us so bad, I don't know how we come out of it. You'd probably make more money selling lemonade on the corner."

Asked about Metallica's public battle with Napster in 2000, Benante hails the thrash icons for taking the stance they did.

He adds: "They were absolutely right about it. You see where it went. All those people who said, 'Fuck Metallica. They are rich bastards'. They were protecting their art, their intellectual property so that some asshole does not come along and take your art.

"They make the money while you just make the art and you just give it away. People don't know anything about this. Until you have lived the way we live and do what we have done, then you can comment on it.

"The industry of music was one of things hit the worst and nobody did anything about it. They just let it happen. There was no protection, no nothing. Subconsciously this may be the reason why we don't make records every three years or whatever because I don't want to give it away for free.

"I take music very seriously and what I do and what I write is very personal and, for someone to take it is not right. It is like I pay Amazon $12.99 a month and I can just go on Amazon and I can get whatever I want.

"It is basically stealing. It is stealing from the artist – the people who run music streaming sites like Spotify."

Last week, I took advantage of 3 free months of Amazon Music Unlimited and I’ve been really impressed with its vast library and excellent selection of music in Ultra HD. And things only got better when I woke up this morning to discover that Amazon’s audiobook service Audible has now been included through the music app.

If you already have the Amazon Music Unlimited app installed, you may have to update it before you see the Audible tab on top of the home screen. Click it, and you’ll be presented with several categories including Most Popular, Best Of 2024, New Releases, Only From Audible, Great First Listens, Music Memories and more.

My first pick was The Hotel Avocado by Bob Mortimer, but it’s also worth noting that you can select any audiobook and click ‘save for later’ so you don’t lose track of interesting listens.

Looking through the menus for music biographies, a quick search showed me Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen, My Effin’ Life by Geddy Lee, Into The Void by Geezer Butler, I Am Ozzy by Ozzy Osbourne, Confess by Rob Halford, What Does This Button Do? by Bruce Dickinson and Sammy Hagar’s Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock.

As for Amazon Music Unlimited, I love the fact I can switch between audio quality levels on the fly, either on my phone app or on desktop - and with 100 million tracks to explore, podcasts galore and curated playlists, this is a great time to dive in and see what’s on offer - all for free for three months.

With more than 100 million songs, HD and Spatial Audio, ad-free podcasts, playlists galore and Alexa voice control, Amazon Music Unlimited is one of the most popular music streaming services around.

From a blank slate, I searched for The Cure’s new album Songs Of A Lost World and found it was available in Ultra HD which Amazon say is “up to 10 times the quality of standard streaming services.” Opening track Alone sounded amazing through my Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones with noise cancelling activated and really brought the textures to life.

Going back to the main menu - which shares a similar vibe to Apple Music - after listening to Alone, Amazon Music Unlimited had recommended albums by the likes of Siouxsie And The Banshees, The Sisters Of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, The Psychedelic Furs, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The The, Bauhaus and Echo And The Bunnymen, so the algorithm is definitely working and in a good place.

Another thing I really liked about using Amazon Music Unlimited on both my MacBook and smartphone app is the ability to switch between different levels of audio quality. For example, if an album is marked as Ultra HD, you can switch between the 24-bit, 96 kHz setting and the standard version on the fly, just by pressing or clicking a tab under whatever track is playing.

I also appreciated the app’s ‘X-ray’ function, which gives you facts about the band and album your listening to, release dates, song writing credits, line-up changes, group history and more through a series of slides.

Gojira’s performance of Ah! Ça Ira at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is now available on streaming services.

The French extreme metal titans performed their cover of the revolutionary song with opera singer Marina Viotti at the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony on July 26. The four-piece played Ah! Ça Ira after an introduction from an actor playing a beheaded Marie Antoinette, and did so on the side of former prison La Conciergerie, where Antoinette was sentenced to death in 1793 following the French Revolution.

The fiery playthrough swiftly went viral. UK national newspaper The Independent reported that some viewers deemed the moment the “only good thing” about the ceremony, which also featured Lady Gaga and Celine Dion.

On the other hand, certain Christian fundamentalists attempted to ignite a stupor by accusing Gojira’s Olympics performance of being satanic. Singer/guitarist Joe Duplantier responded in a Rolling Stone interview: “It’s none of that. It’s French history. It’s French charm, you know, beheaded people, red wine and blood all over the place – it’s romantic, it’s normal.”

On July 30, Metal Hammer published an op-ed deeming Gojira’s Olympics performance “the most important moment for metal this century”.

“Ultimately, even if you hate Gojira’s music with a passion as bloody and fiery as their recent performance, the band have now statistically been seen more times at once than any other in metal,” wrote journalist Matt Mills. “29 million people tuned in and saw them incite a riverside inferno on Friday. Not even Metallica have entered that many living rooms simultaneously.”

Mills continued: “Metal has been brought to a new apex, and it’s been hoisted there by four men who practise what they preach, evolve with each release and work their derrières off. Has any other singular moment ever done this much good for this form of music?”

Gojira released their latest album, Fortitude, to critical acclaim in 2021. They will headline Derbyshire metal festival Bloodstock Open Air in 2025, alongside Trivium and Machine Head. Tickets to the weekender are now available to purchase.

At least 30 notable metalcore and deathcore bands – including While She Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow, Fit For An Autopsy, Thy Art Is Murder and Currents – have had fake songs published on their Spotify accounts.

The false uploads were spotted by X (formerly Twitter) users earlier this week and have affected dozens of artists. All the tracks appear with similarly styled black-and-white artwork, which seems to be AI-generated. One of the bands affected, German metalcore act Caliban, publicly commented on their profile falling victim to the unauthorised upload and claimed that the music is also AI-generated.

“Dear Fans,” they started (via The PRP). “A song has been released via our Spotify artist profile that is not ours. A fraudulent artist posing as Caliban has uploaded an Al-generated song via a dubious distributor that is now scheduled for release. Caliban is not affiliated with this release.”

The band continued: “We and our team are working on resolving this issue. This appears to have occurred with various bands throughout the scene at this time as labels and managements are committed to rectifying the situation. That being said, we thank you for your ongoing support of real, handcrafted music written by human beings.”

The similarities between the songs and their covers suggests that this mass hacking was a concentrated effort by one individual or group. However, it appears that no one has yet identified themselves as the perpetrator, nor explained the intention behind the false songs.

AI-generated music is currently a hot-button topic, as the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) is embroiled in a lawsuit with music generation startups Suno and Udio. The suit – filed on behalf of record labels Warner Records, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music – alleges that the companies are infringing copyright by using trademarked songs to “train” their AI software. The plaintiffs are seeking up to $150,000 in damages for each infringed work.

Social media platform Discord have launched a way for you to share music with friends using Amazon Music Unlimited.

Whether on a voice call, text chat or DM, you can now set up a queue of music with your Discord friends and explore the sounds together while you chat in real time.

Everyone will need their own Amazon Music Unlimited account to access the new listening party feature - and if you’re not already signed up, by linking your Amazon account to Discord through the Amazon Music Listening Party activity tab, you could qualify for a three-month free trial.

It’s also worth noting that new subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited can currently get a one month free trial.

Discord say in a statement: “We’ve heard from many of you that you want more ways to enjoy musical experiences directly on Discord, whether it’s while talking the night away, doing some studying here and there, or whatever it is you do.

Discord add: “Play your favourites while on the call, and after, if you come across your next musical brain worm while you’re away, save it to your library to easily share with your friends the next time you’re in a call on Discord together.

“Listen to your favourite music and podcasts together in the Discord call. Bring those same songs and podcasts from the call anywhere using the Amazon Music app on desktop, web and mobile. There’s no excuse not to share with your friends the music that means an awful lot to you.”

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek sparked an online backlash after a social media post in which he said the cost of creating "content" is "close to zero".

The boss of the streaming giant said in a post on X: "Today, with the cost of creating content being close to zero, people can share an incredible amount of content. This has sparked my curiosity about the concept of long shelf life versus short shelf life. 

"While much of what we see and hear quickly becomes obsolete, there are timeless ideas or even pieces of music that can remain relevant for decades or even centuries.

"For example, we’re witnessing a resurgence of Stoicism, with many of Marcus Aurelius’s insights still resonating thousands of years later. This makes me wonder: what are the most unintuitive, yet enduring ideas that aren’t frequently discussed today but might have a long shelf life?

"Also, what are we creating now that will still be valued and discussed hundreds or thousands of years from today?"

Music fans and musicians were quick to call Ek out, with one user, composer Tim Prebble, saying: "Music will still be valued in a hundred years. Spotify won't. It will only be remembered as a bad example of a parasitic tool for extracting value from other peoples music. (or "content" as some grifters like to call it)."

Many other X users posted similar criticisms, often referring to the amount of money Spotify pays artists per stream.

Musicians weighed in too, with Primal Scream bassist Simone Marie Butler saying: "Fuck off you out of touch billionaire."

The Future of Music Coalition added: "It actually can still be expensive to make records, especially if you care about paying your collaborators fairly. Many musicians are skilled at cutting corners to accomplish their creative goals within limited budgets.

"And indeed some aspects of production are more affordable than in the past. But this often ends up radically overstated. 'Close to zero?' No."

What to know before purchasing

You might assume that all online music streaming services would offer a gifting service, but not all do - and some platforms only offer the option through a third-party purchase.

Most follow a familiar pattern: you can either buy a subscription and have the details emailed directly to the recipient at a time of your choosing with a personal message, or buy a plastic gift card with your choice of monetary value attached and have it sent to them instead.

Below you'll find several music subscription services along with advice on how to go about purchasing your sub of choice.

Here I've highlighted some of the Louder team's music streaming services of choice and their approach to gifting, so you can work out which is the right one for your giftee.

Spotify

You can’t gift a Spotify Premium subscription directly through the streaming giant's app or website, but you can purchase a Spotify Premium gift card from major online retailers such as Amazon which does the job nicely. You can either get a plastic one delivered by post - or you can send a Spotify Premium subscription direct to your friend of loved one’s email address on a date of your choosing. It’s worth noting that you can’t use a gift card on discounted Spotify plans.

Apple Music

Like Spotify, you can’t gift a subscription to Apple Music through the official site. The only option you have is to buy an Apple gift card which can be delivered to your email address of choice on any day that suits. You can also add a personal message and load it with up to $500/£500 worth of credit, which can be redeemed towards an Apple Music subscription, or used to fund all things Apple-shaped - from App Store purchases, games and movies to a new pair of AirPods or shiny new iPad.

Qobuz

Qobuz still tend to fly a bit under the radar, but their quality audio service is hard to ignore - and it's worth pointing out that Qobuz sits in the no.1 spot in our guide to the best music streaming services. You can gift a Qobuz Studio subscription for three months, six months or 12 months directly through their official website, choosing a personal message and a date for it to be delivered. With hi-res streaming (FLAC 24 bit up to 192 kHz) and more than 100 million tracks, this is a great gift option and a flexible way to pay.

Tidal

Tidal is one of the leading music streaming services out there and there are two tiers: HiFi and HiFi Plus. HiFi offers 16-bit and 44.1 kHz music streaming, while the Plus tier ups that to 24-bit and 192 kHz - and that means access to HiRes FLAC, Dolby Atmos and the awesome Sony 360 Reality Audio. You can’t buy a subscription directly from Tidal, but you can buy a Tidal gift card. In the US, you can buy one for $20 through PayPal’s Gift site which can be sent direct to them via email on a day of your choosing.

Deezer

Deezer is another excellent music streaming service which also offers subscriptions through their website. Again, both email and physical gift cards can be purchased, with the ability to gift a minimum of a one-month sub through to the maximum 12-month option. Deezer gift cards are only available for their Premium service and are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Deezer has loads of FLAC and lossless tracks to explore and can be used through Android, iOS and Xbox.

Amazon Music Unlimited

One of our favourite music streaming services is Amazon Music Unlimited, but sadly there’s no option to gift a sub to the platform. It’s also not possible to redeem an Amazon gift card to access the service either, which means that trying to give Amazon Music Unlimited to a friend or loved one isn’t possible. This is a real shame as it’s a great service with loads to offer.

Foo Fighters’ song Everlong has reached one billion streams on Spotify.

The 1997 single is the post-grunge band’s first to reach 10 digits on the streaming service.

Other rock songs to be featured in Spotify’s “Billions Club” include System Of A Down’s Chop Suey!, Papa Roach’s Last Resort, Linkin Park’s In The End, Radiohead’s Creep and Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer.

Everlong first appeared on Foo Fighters’ second album, 1997’s The Colour And The Shape. Singer/guitarist Dave Grohl wrote the song during the Christmas period in 1996. He told Kerrang! in a 2006 interview: “That song’s about a girl that I’d fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonise perfectly.”

The song was released on August 18, 1997, as the second single from The Colour And The Shape, following Monkey Wrench. It reached number three in the US Alternative Airplay chart and has since been certified Platinum twice over in the country, as well as eight times Platinum in Australia, five times Platinum in New Zealand and two times Platinum in the UK.

Foo Fighters are currently touring in support of their 2023 album But Here We Are. The band will play the Accor Stadium in Sydney tomorrow (December 9) as part of their ongoing Australian dates. They’ll then play a string of European and US shows in the summer of 2024. Tickets are available now.

But Here We Are was Foo Fighters’ first album without longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins since their 1995 self-titled debut. The musician died aged 50 while on tour with the band in Bogotá, Colombia, on March 25, 2022. Two star-studded tribute shows took place in London and Los Angeles later that year.

Papa Roach’s hit single Last Resort has been streamed one billion times on Spotify.

The nu metal anthem hit the landmark last week, a feat achieved by fewer than 500 songs on the entire streaming platform.

“Guess what! This song right here just hit a billion on Spotify!” frontman Jacoby Shaddix said in a video message on Papa Roach’s Instagram account Saturday (October 14). “Thanks for the love, y’all!”

Last Resort was released as the lead single of Papa Roach’s major label debut, Infest, on March 7, 2000. It quickly became the band’s breakthrough song, charting at number one on the US Alternative Airplay Chart and number three on the UK Singles Chart. It’s since been certified Platinum in Germany and 2x Platinum in the UK.

Infest was released on April 25, 2000, and climbed to number five on the US Billboard 200 chart. It remains Papa Roach’s highest-charting album and has been certified Platinum in the UK and 3x Platinum in the US.

Shaddix spoke about the success of Last Resort in a 2017 interview with Metal Hammer.

“It’s still fresh, it still means something, it still unites audiences every night, and it’s saved many, many lives,” the frontman said.

“I meet people every single day of my life, and somebody will tell me that shit. Maybe my purpose on this Earth was to write that song, and that’s fuckin’ A, man. It’s something that’s had a massive impact on music, but also on individuals, and I’m so grateful. It’s one of those songs where it could just be a riff, and you rock out to it, or it could be a life raft. And for me, that’s dope.”

Other heavy metal songs to cross the one billion streams threshold on Spotify include Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, Chop Suey! by System Of A Down and In The End by Linkin Park.

Slash plays his UK hometown for the very first time

So steeped in the lore of the Sunset Strip is Guns N' Roses legend Slash that it's sometimes easy to forget that he was actually originally from the UK! Born in Hampstead, London but raised in Stoke-On-Trent, Slash finally got to play in the town that made him at a special gig alongside his band back in 2011. Fronted by the roof-raising vocals of the excellent Myles Kennedy, Slash played an emotional, 21-song set in Stoke's Victoria Hall - and you can see it all on the special Made In Stoke concert film available on Thunderflix.

Serj Tankian brings us inside his world like never before

In intimate documentary Truth To Power, featuring exclusive interviews and even footage filmed by Serj himself, the System Of A Down frontman opens up like never before to let us see inside his mind and understand what makes a living metal legend and passionate activist tick. Featuring a startling look inside the realities of surviving when war is breaking out all around you, it also features incredible footage of Dickinson and his band Skunkworks playing a concert unlike any other. Amazon have announced that this summer’s Amazon Prime Day will be with us next month on July 11 and 12 - but before the sales extravaganza gets underway, the online shopping giant have announced a top deal.

Dani Filth has expressed his concerns over the music industry's consumer culture and how it's now become an extremely "hard time" for musicians to earn a living. 

The Cradle Of Filth frontman discussed his thoughts while in conversation with Sakis Fragos of Rock Hard Greece, noting how the music business has changed to cater to the consumer's preference of having easy access to music, rather than purchasing material. 

Speaking of the state of the industry from a musician's standpoint, he says (as transcribed by Blabbermouth): "It's been deteriorating ever since… I think 2006 was the year that everything swapped from being comfortable for musicians — well, not necessarily comfortable; it was never comfortable. 

"But [it went to] just being a lot harder with the onset of the digital age, the onset of music streaming platforms that don't pay anybody. Like Spotify are the biggest criminals in the world. I think we had 25, 26 million plays last year, and I think personally I got about 20 pounds, which is less than an hourly work rate."

Of how fans generally assume musicians to be financially stable, Filth laments: "For example, the other day my girlfriend…She's got an ill cat; her cat's very sick and needed a life-or-death operation. She's a well-known tattooist, and she posted a thing online about… a GoFundMe for her cat, and she was gonna do a raffle and people could win a tattoo, et cetera, et cetera. 

"The point of it is a lot of people were, like, 'Why the fuck should we pay for your cat? You're going out with a multimillionaire?' And she was, like, 'Excuse me, I don't think you understand how the music industry works nowadays. One, he's not a multimillionaire at all. Two, I'm my own person, and this has nothing to do with him.'"

Filth then goes on to elaborate on the misconception of musicians allegedly earning alot through their album sales, noting how in reality, particularly during a period of time where cost of living has increased, artists struggle more than the rockstar stereotype would have people believe.

"I think people just have this amazing ability to [believe] that when you have stuff out there, like physical product, that you're earning a fortune from it." he says. "They don't realize you have so many people taking pieces of the pie — record company, management, accountants, blah blah blah blah; it doesn't matter. If you're not getting any money in the first place, there's not much money to share around. 

He concludes: "Yeah, the music industry is on its knees at the moment. I still enjoy making music — don't get me wrong; I love it — but, yeah, the musician nowadays is finding a million things against them. It's a hard time."

A new video streaming platform has launched, and it's aimed squarely at heavy metal fans. Thunderflix is available for £6.99/$6.99 per month, and launches with feature-length videos of Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Slipknot, Iron Maiden and many more.

The service has been launched by Samuel Douek, a former marketing coordinator at Nike, who also launched the Hola Mexico Film Festival in Los Angeles in 2006. It's available worldwide (although Russia is currently blocked) via any computer, mobile device or TV with streaming access. 

"Film has always been my life’s work, but heavy metal has been in my soul since I was a 6-year-old kid,” Douek tells IndieWire.

Amongst the films available at launch are Slipknot's Day Of The Gusano: Live In Mexico, Black Sabbath's The End, Rage Against The Machine's Live At Finsbury Park, Bruce Dickinson's Scream For Me Sarajavo, and Murder In The Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Story, as Thunderflix promises to give fans a mix of "new releases, live performances, documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, and official content from their favourite artists."   

"I want Thunderflix to be the main library of official concerts and films that have come out in the last 30+ years,” says Douek. “Concerts that only existed on VHS or DVD, even those DVDs we got on the [limited edition] digipaks with bonus concerts or making offs. Add all those past concerts and films, and bring all the stuff that was released through the pandemic – hundreds of streamed shows, some with crazy production like the Powerwolf, Epica, and others… plus all the things that will come out in the future.”

"At Thunderflix, we understand the film biz," say the company. "But most importantly, we’re metalheads. We appreciate metal in all its shapes and forms. From the headbanging riffs of thrash and death metal to the dark and atmospheric passages of black metal. We are not afraid to raise our swords to Valhalla."

Thunderflix also promises to pay more to content creators than platforms like Spotify and YouTube. 

As for that $6.66 subscription price point, Douek is happy to explain. “A lot of streaming platforms I was paying [for], might be like $5, $6, $7 every month. I’d like something on my bill that says ‘6-6-6’ every month,” he says. “We’re metalheads, we know what we want and that number unites us. It’s the perfect number."

To kick off the new year, music streaming giant Spotify have unveiled a brand new feature for their platform that is shaping up as one of their most unique ideas ever. Labelled Playlist In A Bottle, it gives users the chance to create a 'playlist time capsule' of sorts, putting together a mix of various songs using prompts from Spotify itself that users can then revisit at a later date - one year from now, to be precise.

We've had a look at how it all works, what you need to do to get involved and any other issues or questions you may have about it all. Read on to find out more....

What is Spotify Playlist In A Bottle?

Playlist In A Bottle is a fun, quick feature designed to give users an opportunity to capture a moment in time using the songs that mean the most to them. Or, as Spotify themselves put it, it's their "latest interactive, in-app experience that captures who you are musically right now and then lets you revisit your 2023 musical self one year later."

How do I do a Playlist In A Bottle?

We're glad you asked! Head to spotify.com/playlistinabottle on your mobile - this will launch your Spotify app and take you straight to the new feature (make sure you have the latest version of the app installed). Simply pick your preferred digital time capsule (we picked a lunchbox), and answer a series of prompts to pick the songs you want included. Once you're done, Spotify will 'seal' it up until next year. Easy! You can also share a "personalised card" based on your Playlist In A Bottle across social media, if you wish.

What kind of questions does Playlist In A Bottle ask?

When we test ran it a few times we got everything from A Song That Will Be This Year's Summer Anthem and The Song You Want To See Live This Year to A Song That Reminds You Of Your Favourite Person and A Song That Sounds Like The Year 3023. Though you only need answer three categories, you can add more if you life and can cycle through different question options until you get ones you like the sound of the most.

How many songs does Playlist In A Bottle use?

Playlist In A Bottle only needs to takes three songs from you to work, but as mentioned above, you can add plenty more if you want, and you have quite a wide range of prompts to choose from in terms of what songs actually end up in there. 

When can I access my Playlist In A Bottle again?

Next year! January 2024 to be precise, when the 'bottles' (or, depending on what digital symbol you choose, pockets, lunch boxes or teddy bears) will be opened again. Will your predictions and hopes for your musical future come to pass? Only time will tell.

With so many streaming services available to us, many of them will be cutting prices on their subscriptions on Cyber Monday to try and tempt you in.
