Louder Than Life festival has announced Slayer will perform in 2025, following the thrashers’ planned set this year being cancelled by adverse weather.

The thrash favourites were supposed to take the stage at the Louisville, Kentucky festival on September 27. However, the entire day – which also featured Anthrax, Evanescence, In This Moment and more – was cancelled due to extreme weather off the back of Hurricane Helene.

The show would have been Slayer’s second since returning from a five-year retirement earlier this year. They made their official comeback at Riot Fest in Chicago on September 22, playing many classic tracks as well as rarities 213 and Reborn.

Now, Slayer are the first act confirmed for Louder Than Life next year. It’s also the first 2025 date the band have announced.

Danny Wimmer of festival organiser Danny Wimmer Presents comments: “We can’t wait to welcome fans back to finish what we started this year and celebrate the return of Slayer. Our team is hard at work finalising an incredible lineup that we can’t wait to reveal this winter. It’s going to be epic, and we can’t wait to see everyone back in Louisville next September.”

Slayer previously retired in November 2019, following an extensive farewell tour. Guitarist Kerry King has said the band’s shows post-return will be few and far between.

He told Classic Rock History, “It’ll be fun to play with [Slayer guitarist] Gary Holt for a few gigs; I haven’t seen him in almost five years, so that will be cool. And it’ll be cool to get together with [bassist/vocalist] Tom Araya and spit some hate out at people, but don’t get used to this being a yearly event.”

As well as a cancellation, Slayer’s comeback has been blighted by a death. One fan died after sustaining injuries either during or just before the band’s return show at Riot Fest. The festival and his friends and family have offered differing accounts on what occurred.

Louder Than Life 2025 will take place at Louisville’s Kentucky Exposition Center from September 18 to 21. Early-bird tickets go on sale next month.

Poppy joined them onstage for new track Soft Spine, which was released last month. Architects frontman Sam Carter came on during Yellowjacket, immediately followed by a performance of Circle With Me with Jinjer singer Tatiana Shmayluk. Watch video of the three performances below.

After the show, Spiritbox posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of frontwoman Courtney LaPlante backstage with Poppy and Shmayluk at Louder Than Life. “all the girls are girling,” they wrote as a caption.

Louder Than Life was scheduled to take place from September 26 to 29 but had its second day cancelled as a result of extreme weather. The day was supposed to be headlined by Slayer, who played their first live show in five years the week beforehand. Anthrax, Evanescence, In This Moment and more also had their sets cancelled.

Spiritbox released their new EP, The Fear Of Fear, late last year and seem to be working on new music. In a December interview with Revolver, LaPlante said, “I’m looking forward to making new music. That’s the thing that has been missing for most of this year. ’Cause we have our new EP, but we made it at the beginning of the year. So it feels time to incubate something new.”

In January, the band shared a photo of themselves in the studio with former Bring Me The Horizon keyboardist/producer Jordan Fish.

Spiritbox will headline a European tour in February. The run will start with a show at London’s 10,000-capacity Alexandra Palace, marking the band’s biggest-ever UK headline gig.
Another live music event has been hampered by extreme weather after day two of Louder Than Life festival in Kentucky, USA, was cancelled.

The second day of the four-day event at Louisville Highland Festival Grounds was pulled in its entirety on Friday, resulting in fans missing out on a Slayer headline slot as well as scheduled performances by Anthrax, In This Moment, Evanescence, Clutch, Fozzy, Alien Ant Farm and more.

Slayer's appearance was a big selling point for the festival, as it was one of a small number of reunion shows.

The expected weather is said to be part of the hangover from Hurricane Helene, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States.

Louder Than Life organisers said in a statement: "Louder Family, we're heartbroken to share this, but the weather just isn't in our favoor today. We've been working closely with our meteorologists and local authorities, holding on to the hope that we can open doors, but the continuous wind gusts simply make it impossible for us to proceed safely.

"We know how disappointing this is – it's gut-wrenching for us too. But your safety, along with the safety of our artists and crew, will always be our number one priority.

"The support and patience you have showed us today has been nothing short of incredible."

The event's third day was expected to go ahead as planned, with a new area added for fans to stay dry, although Falling In Reverse were unable to get to the site due to continuing bad weather across the wider area.

Organisers added: "Hope you rested up, because today’s going to hit harder than ever. The lineup is stacked, and it’s game on.

"Unfortunately, due to weather and travel issues, Falling In Reverse is unable to make it to Louisville, but, the iconic Till Lindemann has stayed in town to take the stage just for you.

Plus, we’ve added sets by Jager Henry and Return to Dust at the Kroger Big Bourbon Bar.

"Trust us – today’s going to be unforgettable. Let’s do this."

Earlier this month, Slipknot's appearance at Knotfest was cut short due to severe weather conditions that affected the full event.

A post shared by Louder Than Life (@louderthanlifefest)

A photo posted by on

"Not even a text," he insisted. "Not even an email. I’ve talked to everybody else from the band on the phone, text, or email. If Tom hit me up, I’d probably respond. It probably depends on what he hit me up for, but I don’t wish him dead at this moment."

Kerry King's new project - bannered under his own name - will feature Slayer bandmate Paul Bostaph on drums, ex-Machine Head guitairst Phil Demmel, Hellyeah bassist Kyle Sanders and Death Angel singer Mark Osegueda. "Could Slayer play a show again? I’m sure there’s a scenario." It seems that scenario has unfolded sooner than expected.
